The BJP led alliance is set to form government again in the state of Assam as the Assam Assembly Election Results 2021 are being updated. The NDA alliance led by the ruling party Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) looks set to win comfortably over the Grand Alliance led by the Indian National Congress (INC) in Assam. The BJP led NDA has won 76 seats in the Assam Assembly Elections 2021, the INC led Grand Alliance has won in 49 seats with the remaining lone seat going to the non-allied party of Raijor Dal (RD).

The elections in Assam were held in 3 phases on 27th March, 1st April and 6th April. The polling turnout in Assam were 79.93%, 80.96% and 82.33% in the 1st, 2nd and 3rd phases respectively. The ruling party BJP contested 92 seats and its alliance Asom Gana Parishad fought 26 seats. On the Grand Alliance front, Congress fought for 94 seats and its ally AIUDF competed for victory in 14 seats.

The BJP led alliance with Asom Gana Parishad (AGP), the United People’s Party Liberal (UPPL) and the Gana Suraksha Party (GSP) – the allies of BJP mainly represent the Bodo and Sarania companies respectively. The Grand Alliance led by the Indian National Congress which was dubbed as “Mahajot” comprises of the All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF), Bodoland People’s Front (BDF), the Communist Party of India [Marxist] (CPI (M)), CPI (Marxist & Leninist) and Anchalik Gana Morcha (AGM). The NDA has had to deal with attacks from 2 fronts in the Assam elections, one challenge was posed by the INC led Grand Alliance and its minority supported allied parties of AIUDF and BDF. The other challenge for the NDA was from strong and newly formed regional parties of Assam Jatiya Parishad (AJP) and the Raijor Dal (RD) a party that was formed out of the protests against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) that swept Assam in 2019. Raijor Dal President Akhil Gogoi won the Sibasagar seat while being jailed.

The counting began at 8AM in the state of Assam at 331 counting halls spread throughout the state. Strict health protocols were followed during the counting process which took place during the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic crisis in the country. A 3 tier security system was also arranged at all the counting halls to ensure maximum security and smooth functioning of the counting process. The results were declared slowly throughout the day for each seat and the final results declared late at night on 2nd May. The ruling party of BJP was looking to create history and it seems like it has succeeded in doing so by becoming the only non-Congress government to win consecutive terms in Assam.

In spite of strong resistance against the BJP for the implementation of CAA in Assam, the party managed to win on the power of benefit and development schemes while avoiding the CAA during campaigning. Also, there is no clarity on who will become the Chief Minister in Assam, while all major BJP players including current Chief Minister Sarbananda Soonwal who won after re-elections. BJP Assam Chief Ranjeet Das claimed the NDA will win over 83 seats in the state after the party had earlier claimed to secure victory in 100+ seats, the BJP led NDA has only won 76 seats in total so it remains to be seen who will be appointed CM of Assam but one fact that is know is that the next CM will be from BJP.
